Big Green Week

Various interruptions have prevented me from starting a large piece I’ve been planning for a while.  Campaigning for the Scraptorzoic Era (very time-consuming business) and my son’s half-term (great excuse to relax) being two reasons.  However, I’m now excited, geared up and raring to go as I have been selected as one of the Big Green Week artists.  The project runs from April to June, culminating in an exhibition in Bristol  (9-17th June) as part of Big Green Week.   Having collected enough scrap, recycled and found materials over the past month, I started on the piece pictured below today (hooraayy)!   For further information about Big Green Week, please visit:

Scraptors launch fund-raising appeal on IndieGoGo

The Scraptors Sculpture group (I am one of four members) are planning to create the ‘Scraptorzoic Era’, a sculptural fantasy narrative, including giant floating sculptures, at the Magdalen Project (an eco charity-run farm & educational centre on the Somerset/ Dorset border).   As an eco sculpture project, we’ll be using recycled farm machinery, car bodies and various other retrieved materials to create the extensive work.

This will hopefully be funded via international crowd-funding, and we have just launched our pledge on IndieGoGo:    The campaign runs until 6th April.  Please consider donating, supporting and sharing this link.  Thanks!

Scraptorzoic Era by the Scraptors, at The Magdalen Project, Magdalen Farm, Winsham, Chard, Somerset TA20 4PA   2013 onwards

I visited Peter Burke’s Earthworks Exhibition at Victoria Art Gallery, Bath on Friday.  I found the work beautiful, simple and direct.   Human heads and bodies of individuals connected with the area, made from earth and steel.  I’m often intrigued by the process and mechanics of artwork.  The surprising combination of materials and how these are connected conceptually and physically.  As Burke clearly states, we are very much of the earth and connected to it.  The range of earth pigments he’s presented just from around Bath also amazed me.  Having always felt nostalgic for the rich reds and ochres of African earth from my childhood, I realise similar soils exist all around me.  What hit me most was how powerful my response to those earth colours and textures was.  I felt a deep sense of identity.

My next piece, which I started planning months ago, will be along similar lines.  Entitled ‘Man models himself on Earth…’ it will be a stretching recycled steel human/tree structure with wire woven around and through it.  The network of threads keeps weaving…
