Work currently on show

Just over a week left to visit exhibitions at Sidcot Arts Centre BS25 1PD & Ginger Fig Gallery TA1 4ER before they end on 9th Feb.  If the snow held you back, now’s a good time to catch them:

Meanwhile, I have started on new work to install at Lanhydrock National Trust Estate (1st March), completed some designs for projects and received a couple of exciting commissions to deliver this year.  One is related to Somerset Art Works and the other Private.  More news on these to follow…

Gallery4Art at Blackmore Farm and more…

I am just finishing off a Butterfly piece for the Ginger Fig Gallery’s 5th Birthday Exhibition ‘The Birds and the Bees’ starting this coming week – not enough time to make the larger piece I envisaged involving a suspended Spiky Pod, as it meant exploring a few unknowns, but will enjoy making that for another show.  I have several upcoming shows to work for, so need to keep focused.  It’s a tricky juggling act – what new work to make for which show and when, keeping to tight deadlines and managing shows that run alongside each other and back to back.

The next one is ‘Art at Blackmore’ with my group Gallery4Art, running from 23rd Feb – 3rd March.  16 of us will be showing a whole range of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, photography, prints and more…  I hope to have some more new work by then!

See below for a more comprehensive list of forthcoming exhibitions.

Ash School Year 5 Bird Sculptures Made From Wire And Recycled Materials

It’s always a good sign when you can bounce out of bed early in the morning willingly!  I have been running a series of 4 morning workshops at Ash School via SAW, linked to the Great Crane Project and the whole school migration project.  It was such a pleasure working there, the children worked so well in groups and the outcomes for their age (9/10 yr olds) were wonderful.

We were kindly lent Jack-the-stuffed-crane by Damon (of Great Crane Project) to refer to.  Jack is one of the few cranes from the project who died from overhead cables.  The rest are thriving in Somerset – having been brought over as eggs from Europe.  With other resources, various demonstrations and 1to1 help, the children worked in small groups creating nesting, flying, pecking birds of all denominations.  From beautiful collaborative drawings to final sculptures, they worked busily, collecting, selecting and constructing from a range of wire and found materials.

The children divided up their roles within groups, so each person had a part of their bird to make.  These were then attached towards the end, before final details were added – beads, bottle tops, horseshoes, pegs, bedsprings and clips all found a nesting place!

We had a visit from Western Gazette, so may feature in this week’s papers with Jack!  The work will be displayed in Ash School Hall next week for all to see, including visiting teachers from Europe.  The sculptures will then tour to Ginger Fig’s 5th birthday exhibition entitled ‘Birds and Bees’ (1b Bath Place, Taunton TA1 4ER) until 16th Feb.

In addition to regular teaching work at All Hallows Prep School, I have been running some workshops this month at Ash School, near Martock, linked to the wonderful Great Crane Project via SAW.  Year 5 children have been making birds in various states, using wire and recycled materials.  It’s been a delight to witness children working so happily and busily together – peaceful collaboration in small groups.  Today Western Gazette photographers flew in and out to take pics of the workshop.  A lesson in itself about the adult world and artifice. Photos will soon be posted of the finished products.

Butterflies, bees and other bugs…

Now that most of my exhibitions are over for a while, I have a bit more time to focus on some drawings in between a couple of commissions.  After months of intensive sculpting, this is a gift – an opportunity to get new ideas rolling. Some edgy new work for gardens with a difference…  Ginger Fig Gallery has asked me to produce some work for their forthcoming ‘Birds and bees, butterflies and other bugs…’ exhibition – prompting me to visit some butterfly houses and get some inspiration.  Longleat and Cadbury Gardens are great resource centres for butterflies and cocoons, kindly giving me some dead ones for my collection.

I went to a couple of Private Views in Bath yesterday evening.  Duncan Cameron (love his work of collected creatures/bones and sketchbooks to die for – I even own a piece!) at Bo Lee Gallery and the Gillespie sisters at Beaux Arts.  I was very moved by Sarah Gillespie’s intimate charcoal and ink drawings of moths and bees… it seems many of us are on the same wavelength.

New ideas to follow..

Shiny cars meet earthy art

The Mercedes showroom in Taunton provided an incongruous setting for a pop-up art exhibition, organised by Cath Esbester of Ginger Fig Gallery, in conjunction with Mercedes.  Alison Jacobs and I installed our work (and that of  Liz Howe, Frank Wilson, Craig Askew & Sheila Rendell) ready for a launch of the new Mercedes ‘B-class’ over the weekend.  It was an interesting combination: earthy art set against extremely shiny cars – copper wires and coloured metal gleaming in the sunlight.  Each did the other justice.   See pics below:
