Raised in Kenya, Fiona graduated from the Byam Shaw School of Art, London (Fine Art, Sculpture), later gaining a PGCE at Exeter University. Now based in Somerset, Fiona makes sculptural and installation work using mixed media, particularly found and reclaimed materials including steel, copper, lead, wire, twine, wood, paper and wax, giving them new life.
Materiality and process are central to her practice. Her work is primarily hand-made using labour-intensive, instinctive building processes such as wrapping, weaving and layering – forms of 3d mark-making. Collecting materials is intrinsic to the process, either directly from nature or man-transformed from derelict industrial sites and scrapyards.
She enjoys the alchemy of materials, exploring their capabilities and contrasts. Incongruous combinations such as hard, strong steel with fragile, translucent paper and wax set up dynamic tensions. Copper has particular significance with its receptive quality, transmitting energy as the electrical zap of neurons in the brain.
Fiona is exploring connections between line, growth and energy, weaving drawings in space, treating line as object, creating hybrids that extend line from plane as 3d form, blurring boundaries between sculpture, drawing and installation. She is interested in universal life forms, organic primal structures, commonalities from micro to macro, metamorphosis and nature’s cyclical persistence. Microscopic hidden structures vital to our being (neurons, pollen, dust, webs, eggs, veins, plant fibres) reflect the magnitude of life.
Fiona exhibits extensively, works to commission, runs community projects and teaches art. Last year she created a woven canopy for the Mekong Garden, Chelsea Flower Show, which won gold and best artisan awards and in 2015 she ran ‘step in stone’, an Arts Council-funded project of artscapes in Mendip quarries. Other awards include the Environmental prize, Devon Recycled Sculpture Trail ’14; Atkinson Gallery Summer Show prize ’11 and David Shepherd’s 3d Wildlife Artist of the Year ’09. She is currently studying for an MFA at Bath Spa University.
Fiona is the East Mendip Rep for Somerset Art Works and a trustee of Black Swan Arts.
