The Fall

250 (h) x 240 (w) x 150 (d) cm

Recycled and found materials: steel, copper, wood, wool, sisal, twine, rope, leaves, feathers, naturally dyed cotton, wax

2021

Inspired by a fallen tree and its cascading root forms, the work evolved into a piece about wider references of falling: autumn/fall and the story of Icarus: human desires, frailty and the world's precarity. It is a poetic reflection of our dystopian world. At the time I was reading The Overstory (Richard Powers). This phrase captured me: ‘There are no separable events. The bird and.. branch.. are.. linked creatures..’ Materials/objects are sourced from different places, each with a story; abandoned objects given new life. Processes include weaving, wrapping, hand stitching, welding. Sculptural lines and objects in space, capturing a moment in time, become a mini environment in which visitors may navigate. It has a sense of sadness but is also hopeful of nature being more cared for.
