In 2023, Fiona was commissioned by Spoken World (awarded an Arts Council England grant) to create a textiles train (depicting a river), and crown (copse of oak trees) for an animated promenade giant 'Sovereign Nature'. The giant portrayed aspects of Mother Nature. Somerset's wildlife - both endangered and reintroduced - were represented on her garments.
The project offered a workshop programme to engage community groups to participate in making her garments. This included a free workshop with Fiona Campbell to help make the large river train for giant Sovereign Nature’s costume. Activities involved hand-stitching recycled fabric pieces together, and drawing endangered creatures on fabric. The making process included storytelling by Sharon Jacksties, sharing stories about Nature - reviving the age-old practice of telling/listening whilst making.
Sovereign Nature performed at Taunton Green Fair, The Green Scythe Fair, and Pitchfolk Festival, Somerset, and appeared at residential care homes in the area.
Spoken World is a collaboration between Sharon Jacksties and Jem Dick. The giant was built by Jem.
A 30 minute documentary was made of her journey from creation to public promenade appearances by film maker David Adams. Sovereign Nature is now a local resource and hub for other arts activities that explore our relationship with the natural world.
